The family cemetery of Lt. Col. James Steen, a South Carolina militia officer during the American Revolution, is on his plantation nearby along Thicketty Creek. Steen commanded units in several campaigns from 1775 to 1781 and was killed in 1781 while attempting to arrest a Loyalist in North Carolina.
