In 1869, S. A. Browne opened a 24' x 80' expansion with groceries beside an existing 20' x 50' building. In 1872, the first brick building in Pentwater was erected there. In 1874, the Oceana Times used the building to produce its newspaper, and from 1880 to 1928 the Pentwater News was published there. In 1928, E.L. Bates bought the building, and it became known as the Pentwater New Block with multiple uses. In 1960, the second floor was renovated into apartments. Around 1968, the building housed The Candle Shop. In 1980, Donna and Chick Kolinger purchased the building, and in 1983 the Brass Anchor opened after a three-year renovation.
