Lafitte's Grove

In 1817, the freebooter Jean Lafitte established a fort and settlement here and maintained his headquarters while preying on shipping in the Gulf of Mexico. In February 1821, the Battle of the Three Trees was fought here between Lafitte's men and Karankawa Indians. Later in 1821, after the United States government ordered his departure, Lafitte abandoned and burned the fort.
