John Proctor rode on horseback during a December night in 1813 to warn settlers along Ridge Road from this place to Clarkson that British and Indian forces were approaching after the burning of Lewiston. The next morning he joined Capt. Eleazer McCarty's regiment, which proceeded toward Lewiston, and the following night they surprised and captured enemy forces quartered at Molyneaux Tavern. Nearby, at the primitive log cabin of Elijah Downer, DeWitt Clinton and his companions stopped for breakfast during their eventful trip over Ridge Road in 1810.
