Bethania was the first planned Moravian village in North Carolina, a colonial and antebellum trade and agricultural center, and the only remaining continuous, independent Wachovia settlement. It contains unique remnants of its original medieval-style plan, in which families lived in a central village and the Moravian church assigned each family roughly equal strip fields in bottomlands along Muddy Creek and orchard lots on higher ground.
