Point Lookout is an 8,427-foot sandstone summit in Mesa Verde National Park and one of its most prominent landmarks, rising about 1,600 feet above Mancos Valley. Part of the East Rim of Mesa Verde, it overlooks the Montezuma and Mancos valleys and the La Plata Mountains, with a trail and the park’s entrance road along its slopes. Soldiers from Fort Lewis once used the summit for heliographic signaling to troops farther west. Geologically, it is formed from the Point Lookout Sandstone, a resistant Cretaceous layer above the softer Mancos Shale on the Colorado Plateau, and its name was officially adopted in 1934 by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.
