Fell Arboretum is a botanical garden woven throughout the campus of Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, where more than 4,000 numbered, marked, and mapped trees represent over 100 varieties. Its beginnings date to the university’s founding years, when Jesse W. Fell planned the landscape in 1858 with botanist and designer William Saunders, whose layout shaped the Quad. Fell advanced the work in 1867 by obtaining $3,000 from the state legislature for landscaping and planting 1,740 trees, followed by 107 more the next year. Recognized as an arboretum in 1995, it remains a historic landscape and living collection with ArbNet Level II accreditation.
