On May 28, 1864, Confederate cavalry under Major General Fitzhugh Lee withstood the Federal advance for five hours in a severe engagement here, allowing the Army of Northern Virginia to take its position beyond the Totopotomoy. Many unknown dead of both armies were buried nearby.
