Earle B. Combs, a Pebworth native, was centerfielder for the Yankees from 1924 to 1935 and a coach from 1936 to 1943, helping New York win 11 pennants and 9 World Series. He had a lifetime batting average of .325. He played with the Louisville Colonels from 1922 to 1923, was elected to the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame in 1963 and to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970, and served on the Board of Regents at Eastern Kentucky University from 1956 to 1975.
