Boone County was formed in 1798 by legislative act from part of Campbell County and was named for Daniel Boone, the renowned Kentucky pioneer-explorer. Big Boone Lick, called the graveyard of the mammoth, was discovered in 1729 by Capt. M. de Longueil. In 1756, Mary Inglis was brought here by Shawnees as the first white woman in Kentucky. In 1765-66, an extensive bone collection was sent to England.
