In Anacostia in Southeast Washington, D.C., the Go-Go Museum is dedicated to go-go, the city’s homegrown funk style that emerged between the mid-1960s and late 1970s. Its creation grew from the 2019 Shaw protest movement known as Don’t Mute DC, sparked by a dispute over music long played outside a store on Chuck Brown Way and shaped by concerns about gentrification and cultural loss. Organized chiefly by Ronald Moten and Dr. Natalie Hopkinson, with city support and about $2.5 million raised, the project evolved from virtual and mobile programming into a permanent museum that opened in 2025, preserving both go-go’s sound and its community history.
