Neighbors in a small rural community in this area organized a church congregation in 1872 and met the need for a house of worship by working together to cut trees and build a log structure. In 1894, J.M. Hughes and his family formally deeded the two acres on which the church stood to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and, because the congregation had outgrown the original building, construction began that year on a new sanctuary. Under the leadership of the Rev. John Goodwin, church members built the new wooden structure, and the Rev. H. Toomie, presiding elder of the denominational conference, chose the name Sardis Methodist Church. The Sardis congregation was served by circuit-riding ministers until the 1940s, remained active until it was disbanded in 1972, was reorganized in 1981 after community fundraising renovated the building, and held regular worship services until 1986. The church still serves as a focal point for the community and is used for special services such as weddings, funerals, and homecoming celebrations.
