Muncy was laid out in 1799 by Benjamin McCarty. It was named for the Monsey Indians, a tribe of Delawares who inhabited this area before the arrival of whites. Four Indian paths—Shamokin, Wyalusing, Wyoming, and Towanda—formed a junction here.
