This block served as a stepping stone for getting into and out of carriages. The side facing the street bears the name John C. Welch, and it originally stood in front of Welch's residence in the 500 block of West Main Street. One of the Welch descendants, Douglas R. Welch, later served as Mayor of Ionia.
