Thomas W. Cobb was a United States Representative and Senator from Georgia. Born in Columbia County, Georgia, he pursued preparatory studies, studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced in Lexington, Georgia. He later moved to Greensboro and was elected to the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Congresses, serving from March 4, 1817 to March 3, 1821. Though comparatively young when he died, he had served with marked ability as a Judge of the Superior Court, a member of the House of Representatives in Congress, and a U.S. Senator from Georgia. Cobb County, Georgia, was named in his honor, and the county seat of Marietta was named for his wife, Mary. His epitaph says that he died on Monday 1st February 1830 in the 46th year of his age, that he had been a Representative and Senator in the Congress of the United States and at the time of his death was a Judge of the Superior Courts of the State of Georgia, and that in private and public life he was remembered as fond and affectionate, ardent and devoted, honorable, generous, sincere, independent, inflexible, pure, incorruptible, amiable, and useful.
