Boot Hill Cemetery, used from 1858 to 1877, began with the grave of a suicide and held people who died by violence, accident, disease, drowning, and natural causes. Those buried there included Dick Gosset, killed in the Fort Ewell gunfight in February 1869; E.M. Crain, a Confederate veteran and one of four cholera victims in 1869; John Smithwick, murdered in 1870; Jim —, assassinated from the door of the old Rock Store in 1872; an unknown person killed in a gun battle while standing in front of the old Rock Store in 1873; an unknown person killed unintentionally by Clabe Young while he was playing a prank; S. Glenn Greer, who was thrown from a horse; an unknown Black man who drowned in the Nueces in 1875; an unknown murderer of James Minter, presumed to have been a Dalton gang member; Lige Harrison, Jr., killed at age 17 in a hunting accident in 1876; Samuel Wm. McCreery, murdered at his sheep ranch in 1877; and Pemanio Palacios and Phelix Wheeler, an infant, both of whom died of natural causes.
