Carcajou Point on Lake Koshkonong preserves both a prehistoric Upper Mississippian Oneota settlement and a later Ho-Chunk village associated with Chief White Crow, occupied into the 1820s and 1830s. Excavations beginning in 1957 uncovered houses, pits, burials, pottery, and other artifacts that documented a substantial settlement and a long sequence of Native occupation, followed by a gap before the historic village. The site became especially important for Wisconsin archaeology because its radiocarbon dates were the first in the region for the Oneota tradition, and its pottery helped define local Oneota types, chronology, and links to wider Upper Midwest and Middle Mississippian traditions.
