Established by Congress in 1903 as an infantry post, Fort Benjamin Harrison was named for the former U.S. president from Indianapolis. It became an important administration and finance training center. Its historic district, listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, retains the characteristics of a turn-of-the-century military community.
