In February 1862, the Confederate outer defenses formed a 3-mile broken line around Fort Donelson and Dover, with trees cut in front of the entrenchments to create an abatis and field artillery batteries placed on commanding ridges. Graves' Kentucky Battery, supported by the 41st Tennessee Infantry, occupied this ridge. On February 13, the battery fired on Union forces moving eastward toward the Confederate left, and on February 15 it moved to the Wynn's Ferry Road area and took part in the break-out attempt.
