Across the Kanawha River from this point stood a Civil War camp for the Union Army from 1862 to 1864. The site had 56 cabins and parade grounds for the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Col. Rutherford B. Hayes and Lt. William McKinley, who later became presidents of the United States.
