Historic Arkansas Museum in downtown Little Rock preserves a cluster of early Arkansas buildings and uses both restored structures and collections to interpret the state's past. It grew from a 1939 preservation campaign led by Louise Loughborough after several old houses, including the Hinderliter House, faced condemnation. With support from the Works Progress Administration, the state legislature, private donors, and architect Max Mayer, the site opened in 1941 as the Arkansas Territorial Restoration and was renamed in 2001 after renovations. Its holdings span furniture, firearms, knives, pottery, jewelry, and Caddo pottery, while the surviving buildings themselves remain central to telling Little Rock's early capital-era story.
