Rainy Peak, a 7,768-foot mountain in Washington’s North Cascades south of Rainy Pass, rises along the boundary of North Cascades National Park and the Stephen Mather Wilderness. Its wet maritime climate, shaped by Pacific storms, brings heavy rain and especially dense winter snowfall that can be avalanche-prone, while summers are often clearer. Water and ice define the mountain’s character: runoff drains toward Rainy Lake and Bridge Creek tributaries, and the retreating Lyall Glacier in its north cirque feeds waterfalls dropping about 1,000 feet into the lake below. Rainy Peak also reflects the larger geologic forces that built and glaciated the rugged North Cascades.
