During the summer of 1943, nine men from Hardin County lost their lives in the Battle of Munda in World War II, and others from the county were wounded in the fighting of the Solomon Islands Campaign. The dead were Cleed Armentrout, Leroy Bernard, William Britton, Jack Castor, Charles Clevenger, Frederick Long, Charles Mohn, Paul Prater, and William Thompson.
