Tahquamenon Falls State Park covers 46,179 acres in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula along the Tahquamenon River near Paradise, making it the state’s second largest park. Much of the park remains undeveloped, preserving a remote setting around the Upper and Lower Falls. The Upper Falls drop 50 feet in a single plunge, and spring runoff can make them the second most voluminous vertical waterfall east of the Mississippi after Niagara Falls. The falls’ tannin-stained water is known for its golden-brown color. Popular for hiking, camping, and boating, the park also reflects ongoing debate over balancing public access with the preservation of wild scenery.
