A. Sherley & Bro. Hardware Store

Lewis and Paulina Sherley moved from Kentucky to North Texas about 1853. When Anna was established in 1872, their grandsons, brothers Andrew and Fred Sherley, opened a hardware store, and in 1894 they built this structure to house the business. Over time they also worked as undertakers and sold furniture, farming implements and machinery, wagons, cotton, grain, and groceries. Wagon-weighing scales once stood in front of the building but were removed when the road was widened. After the store closed in 1979, the property remained in the family. The building is a fine example of an early Texas commercial building, retaining its original canopy and painted signs, with minimal Victorian-era detailing that includes corbelled brickwork in the parapet and paneled kickplates on the storefront display windows.
