Kimberly, Neil, and Reid Perry are siblings who moved to Greeneville, Tennessee, in 2002 and began performing together as The Band Perry in 2005. Born in Jackson, Mississippi, and raised in Mobile, Alabama, they developed their musical careers from Kimberly’s teenage band, Rain, and her brothers’ later group, the Mobile Music Machine. Kimberly sings lead and plays guitar and piano; Neil plays mandolin, bouzouki, drums, and accordion and sings backup; and Reid plays bass guitar and sings backup. In 2008 they were discovered by Bob Doyle, manager for Garth Brooks, who brought them to a Nashville studio to record demonstrations, and in 2009 Scott Borchetta and Jimmy Harnen signed them to Universal Music Group’s Republic Records imprint. Their debut single, “Hip to My Heart,” appeared later that year, and their breakthrough came in 2010 with “If I Die Young,” which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, crossed over to the Hot 100 pop chart, returned to the pop charts in 2011 after a remix for pop radio, and also reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart. Their self-titled debut album reached No. 1 on the country album chart, with the group writing eight of its 11 songs, and it also produced the singles “All Your Life,” “You Lie,” and “Postcard from Paris.” Produced by Dan Huff, their second album, Pioneer, was released in 2013, topped the country album charts, included eight of 12 songs composed by the group, and yielded four singles, including “Better Dig Two,” which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Later in 2013 they recorded “Gentle on My Mind,” reviving the John Hartford-written Glen Campbell hit for release with a documentary about Campbell’s Alzheimer’s disease, and the recording won the Grammy for Best Country Duo or Group Performance. After beginning in country music, they announced a move toward pop in 2016, then in 2018 released an EP on their own label produced by Rick Rubin, with Kimberly Perry characterizing the group’s new electronic sound as “minimal brutalism.”
