The town of Maxton, N. C., honored the men and women who served in peace and war, especially those who gave their lives in that service, and affirmed continuing hope for those who are POW and MIA. It preserved in granite the names of those from Maxton who made the supreme sacrifice so that later generations could learn and remember: in World War I, Arthur J. Medlin, Robert White McLean, Douglas Purcell, and Otis Betts O'Brien; in World War II, Rufus Merritt Knight, Walter Lee, James Morrison, Currie McLeod, Neil McKeller, Rufus L. Walters, Arthur Cottingham, Edward Townsend, James McLean, Lacy Leach, Alphonso McEachin, David Pipkin, Vernon Odom, John W. Sinclair, Jr., and Donald Henley; in the Korean War, Herbert Leroy Smith; and in the Vietnam War, Rhonnie Lee Clark, Jimmy Locklear, Mural McDaniel, Sylvester Conley, Jr., and John Howard Herring.
