The National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, is the world’s oldest and largest military aviation museum, housing more than 360 aircraft and missiles and drawing about a million visitors annually. Begun in 1923 from preserved artifacts at McCook Field, it evolved through several locations and names before opening its current facility in 1971 and expanding in later decades. Its collections span military aviation from early flight to the post-Cold War era and include major artifacts such as Bockscar, the Apollo 15 Command Module Endeavour, the XB-70 Valkyrie, and presidential aircraft including SAM 26000.
