Hillman State Park in northern Washington County, Pennsylvania, about 25 miles west of Pittsburgh, is a largely undeveloped landscape shaped by both industry and conservation. Oil discovered there in 1885 sparked the brief boomtown of Five Points, and more than 170 wells were drilled in the area. Coal mining began in 1914, and after 1932 the property became Pennsylvania’s largest bituminous coal strip mine before mining ended in 1968. Donated to the state in 1969 by James F. Hillman, it opened as a state park and has since been managed partly for hunting while also supporting recreation, wildlife habitat, and the historic Lyle Covered Bridge.
