Culebra Peak
Nature
Culebra Peak, a 14,053.2-foot mountain in southern Colorado, is the highest summit of the Culebra Range in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the southernmost fourteener in the Rocky Mountains. Standing east-southeast of San Luis, it is notable not only for its prominence, ranked fourth in Colorado, but also for its unusual status on privately owned Cielo Vista Ranch. Access is tightly controlled and requires a fee, making the mountain a long-running focus of disputes over ownership and public entry that have led to lawsuits and at times violence. It remains both a prized climbing objective and a symbol of conflict between remarkable landscapes, private property, and public interest.
