Palmer Island Light, a stone-rubble lighthouse built in 1849 in New Bedford Harbor, served as part of the navigation system for one of New England’s important working ports. From 1888 to 1891, it functioned with Fairhaven Bridge Light as a range light to help vessels avoid Butler Flats and enter or leave the harbor safely. Its navigational role ended in the early 1960s after a hurricane barrier changed the harbor’s layout and new lights at the barrier opening assumed that function. The site remained historically important and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 26, 1980, as Palmer Island Light Station.
