Magic Kingdom, the original Walt Disney World park in Bay Lake, Florida, opened on October 1, 1971, as a larger counterpart to Disneyland and helped define the scale and style of the resort. Conceived by Walt Disney and completed under Roy O. Disney, it centered on Cinderella Castle and introduced the utilidors, service corridors built at ground level with the park raised above them because of Florida’s high water table. Its six original lands combined Disneyland-inspired areas with Florida’s unique Liberty Square. Continually expanded and adapted, it has remained the world’s most visited theme park and a major symbol of American popular culture.
