River Farm is a twenty-seven-acre estate and garden on the Potomac in Alexandria, Virginia, long associated with George Washington’s Mount Vernon lands and since 1973 home to the American Horticultural Society. Its history begins in 1653–54 as Giles Brent and Mary Kittamaquund’s Piscataway Neck grant, later renamed Clifton’s Neck before Washington bought it in 1760 and called it River Farm. Though smaller than Washington’s original holding, the estate preserves links to that landscape through old trees, gardens, and historic features including former White House gates. Designated a Horticultural Landmark in 2004, it remained publicly accessible after a proposed 2020 sale was abandoned in 2021.
