The 62-acre preserve located approximately one mile west is a remnant of the North Carolina land grants to Jacob Stroup, an early pioneer to this area. Jacob Stroup was born in 1722 in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and died near here in 1804. The Stroup Settlement, started in 1771, eventually grew to nearly 2000 acres.
