Wilkins Peak, a small mountain in southwestern Wyoming between Green River and Rock Springs, is both a geologic landmark and a modern communications hub. Part of the Green River Formation and the Rock Springs Uplift, it preserves evidence of ancient Lake Gosiute in the Eocene about 50 million years ago, with layered dolomitic marlstone, mudstone, and oil shale on its slopes. The mountain also lends its name to the Wilkins Peak Member and lies near important oil shale and trona beds. Today it supports radio and other communications systems, while also serving as a year-round recreation area with roads, trails, hiking, and mountain biking.
