The U.S.S. Hornet is honored for the service and sacrifice of its shipmates, air crewmen, and pilots. Commissioned on November 29, 1943, and decommissioned on June 16, 1970, it received a World War II Presidential Unit Citation and eight Battle Stars, served in Korea, Vietnam, the West PAC, and world deployment, and was the recovery ship for Apollo 11 and 12. It is associated with the Air, Sea and Space Museum in Alameda, CA, on August 27, 1998.
