Zebulon Baird Vance was born near Asheville, N.C., on May 18, 1836, and was remembered as a friend, patriot, philanthropist, scholar, orator, and statesman, as well as a loyal friend to the Jewish people, whom he honored in his classic lecture "The scattered nation." He was elected Governor of North Carolina in 1862, 1864, and 1876, served as Senator from North Carolina from 1879 to 1894, died in Washington, D.C., on April 15, 1894, and was interred in Riverside Cemetery in Asheville, N.C.
