Red Hill was Patrick Henry's plantation and last home, a sanctuary he cherished as "one of the garden spots of the world" that embodied his values of virtue, independence, and family. The flags in the Commonwealth Courtyard honor Henry's election as the first governor of Virginia on June 29, 1776, when Virginia extended from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River, and during his first term the Grand Union flag flew over the Governor's Palace in Williamsburg. From Virginia's original territory, Kentucky became an independent commonwealth in 1792; Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin were created between 1803 and 1848; and West Virginia became an independent state during the Civil War. A bronze bust of Patrick Henry by Frederick William Sievers was cast from the original model preserved at Scotstown for a bust commissioned in 1932 for the Virginia State Capitol, and another replica is exhibited in the Patrick Henry Executive Office Building in Richmond. Red Hill was designated by Congress as the Patrick Henry National Memorial in 1986.
