Joseph Holt was born and is buried here. Born in 1807 and dying in 1896, he served as Commissioner of Patents, Postmaster General, and Secretary of War in President Buchanan's administration from 1857 to 1861. Lincoln named him Judge Advocate General of the Union army in 1862. In 1865, Holt prosecuted the conspirators in Lincoln's assassination. He retired as Judge Advocate in 1875.
