Silver Bridge Collapse
Science & Tech
6
Constructed in 1928, the Silver Bridge connected Point Pleasant and Kanauga, Ohio, and took its name from the aluminum-colored paint used on it. It was the first eye-bar suspension bridge of its type in the U.S. During a rush hour collapse on 15 December 1967, 31 vehicles fell into the river, killing 46 people and injuring 9. A failed eye-bar joint and weld were identified as the cause. The disaster led Congress to pass national bridge inspection standards in 1968.
