Since 1952, the community of Rankin has annually hosted an all-kid rodeo, a unique event in a sport rooted in the American cattle industry. Ranching has been the backbone of Rankin's economy since the town was established in 1911. Many of Rankin's cowboys and ranchers participated in rodeos, while others came from outside the area for roping events, often bringing children who practiced rodeo skills and wanted a place to compete. In 1952, professional roper Walton Poage, with his son and his son's friend, enlisted Rankin residents to create an all-kid rodeo, and the community supported the idea. The first event that year featured two go-rounds of calf roping, ribbon roping, goat roping, steer riding, and a barrel race and boot scramble. Entry for each event cost $1.00, and local businesses and residents donated prizes. By the next year, the Upton County 4-H Club began sponsoring the rodeo. The event grew quickly, and in 1954 approximately 1,500 to 2,000 people attended each night. Held every year since its beginning, the all-kid rodeo has brought commerce to Rankin by drawing visitors and competitors, many of whom later became members of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. For many boys and girls, it was their first rodeo competition and helped launch them in the sport. Today, it continues as a unique tradition that promotes the ranching and family spirit of the Rankin community.
