Mary Flagler Cary Arboretum, a nonprofit public landscape near Millbrook, New York, occupies one thousand nine hundred twenty-four acres and grew from the estate of Mary Flagler Cary and Melbert Cary. After her death in 1967, the property passed to a trust, and in 1971 the New York Botanical Garden was asked to oversee it, when it received its present name. The site later became home to the Institute for Ecosystem Studies, now the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. Its significance lies in combining public access with ecological research across a varied landscape of meadow, forest, swamp, hills, and trout streams, with trails through diverse habitats.
