Brigadier General Peter J. Osterhaus' division of Blair's Corps, with the 1st Brigade under Brigadier General Charles R. Woods and the 2d Brigade under Colonel James A. Williamson, led General Hooker's column to Rossville from Lookout Mountain at 3 p.m. on November 25, 1863. It pushed through the Gap, which was defended by a small force of infantry and artillery, then turned northward onto a road running parallel to and about 1000 yards east of Missionary Ridge. After marching nearly a mile, the command formed in echelons of brigades, with the Second Brigade on the left and the First on the right. They moved obliquely up the slope of Missionary Ridge and carried the crest. The command bivouacked on the eastern slope of the ridge near Bragg's headquarters. The enemy line against which it had been operating in cooperation with Cruft's and Geary's divisions was held by the division of Major General Stewart.
