Hugh D. Sosebee, born in October 1916, made Monroe County, Georgia, his home in 1949 after graduating from the University of Georgia in 1938 and earning a Juris Doctor from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 1941. He served as County Attorney from 1952 to 1963, was appointed to the Superior Court of Monroe County by Governor Carl Sanders in 1964, served twice as a substitute justice of the Georgia Supreme Court, and was appointed Senior Judge in 1978. A charter member of the State Bar of Georgia Code Revision Commission beginning in 1983, he also served longer than any other member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia. In Monroe County, he was a charter member of the Hospital Authority that built the county’s first hospital, acquired the right of way for I-75, helped organize the first Forsyth-Monroe County Chamber of Commerce and served as its president for two years, and was instrumental in the team that brought the Georgia Public Safety Training Center to the county. His intellect, vision, character, and perseverance left a lasting beneficial impact on Monroe County, its courts, and surrounding counties.
