The monument honors the Confederate dead of Wilcox County as heroes in gray, praising those who fought, bled, and fell with a battle cry of "do and dare," and presenting it as a duty to posterity that children should know their virtues and become worthy of their sires. It was erected by the Abbeville Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, on April 26, 1909, in memory of those who died between 1861 and 1865.
