Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge is a 2,800-acre refuge along the Bitterroot River in southwestern Montana, established in 1964 to protect migratory birds and wetland and riparian wildlife. Originally named Ravalli National Wildlife Refuge, it was renamed in 1978 for Montana Senator Lee Metcalf. Birdlife defines the refuge, with about 235 documented species and more than 100 nesting there. It also supports 37 mammal species and 17 reptile and amphibian species. A 160-acre wildlife viewing area provides public access to wetlands and riparian woodland, with nature trails, including a National Recreation Trail, and accessible visitor facilities.
