During August 3-6, 1777, General Herkimer took a 40 mile route to relieve Fort Stanwix. On the night of August 5, 1777, near this spot, he made his final camp before the Battle of Oriskany at the head of his column, and from this point his runners were dispatched to Fort Stanwix. The Battle of Oriskany on August 6, fought between Herkimer's men and St. Leger with his Indians, was the turning point of the Revolution.
