Franklin D. Roosevelt felt truly at home only when passing through the gates at the end of this road. He loved Springwood’s forests and fields and found stability in the peaceful regularity of life there. Near the end of his life, he often longed to return to this beautiful setting. Images show FDR driving along this lane with his dog Fala on October 22, 1944, riding his pony Debbie around Springwood in 1889 at age 8, with some of the family pets in March 1901 at 19, and sledding on the estate in the winter of 1904 at age 22.
