On February 3, 1961, at about 5:15 p.m., a bus carrying FMC Corporation employees was returning to Rock Springs when, about 5 miles west of town, a car passed the bus, lost control on the slippery highway, and crashed head on into an oncoming semi-truck. The truck then lost control and jackknifed into the bus's path. The car's driver was killed instantly, and the bus crash killed bus driver John Bucho as well as Josephine Gilpin, Lola Legerski, Bob Park, Barrie Gilfillan, and Mac McKenna. Many other passengers and the two truck drivers suffered permanent injuries. The community responded remarkably, with aid from the City and Police Departments of Rock Springs, the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Memorial Hospital staff, doctors and nurses, and citizens of Rock Springs, whose support and concern left a lasting mark on the grateful and grieving survivors and the families of the victims.
