The Coterie Club was organized on October 22, 1890, during a period when women in America became prolific builders of vital community institutions through voluntary associations that redefined a woman's place and helped build their communities. Its clubhouse was dedicated in December 1913 to inspire members to "live in the upper realm of thought, feeling, and faculty." Throughout its existence, 698 local women were members. On September 6, 1980, the clubhouse was sold to the Library Cooperative because of increasing maintenance costs, and the Coterie Club formally disbanded in 2006.
